In India face exercises have been practiced through yoga for many centuries. It is well known that the benefits of facial exercises are different from those of skincare products. To see for yourself, just follow a few simple exercises for 10 minutes daily.

The eye exercises

Eyes are the windows to our soul - unfortunately the skin around them is the thinnest and most fragile skin found on the body. As the eyes are the central feature that most people focus on when talking to us, let’s start with a few exercises to improve this area.

Gently place your fingers underneath your eyes and use the muscles of the lower lids to lift the weight of your fingers, then release. Do this 20 times, ideally twice a day. Next, sit upright with your eyes closed and relaxed. While keeping your eyes closed, first look down and then look up as far as possible. Repeat 10 times. Finally, looking straight ahead with your eyes open, look up then down, while keeping your head still. Then look left and right - repeat 10 times.

Lip exercises

Purse your lips together then lift them towards your nose and keep them there for 5 counts, relax and repeat 5 times. Next, keep your lips closed and your teeth together. Smile as broadly as possible without opening your lips and hold for 5 counts. As you relax the smile, turn your lips into a pointed kiss. Keep it there for 5 counts and relax - repeat 10 times.

Cheeks

Have a relaxed smile with your lips closed and then suck in your cheeks toward and on to your teeth. Hold this for 10 counts, relax and repeat 10 times. Keeping your teeth and lips closed, blow air under your top lip and hold it there for 10 counts, then move it to your left cheek side, hold for 10, to your lower lip, hold for 10 and then to your right cheek side while holding it for a count of 10. Repeat 5 times.

The forehead

The area on the forehead can easily become lined and full of wrinkles and facial exercises can be a great help.

Frown as much as possible and try to bring your eyebrows over your eyes while pulling the eyebrows toward one another. Then lift your eyebrow as far as possible while opening your eyes as wide as you can. Repeat 5 times.

Neck exercises

Sit up, tilt your head back and look at the ceiling - while keeping your lips closed start a chewing movement. You will feel the muscles working in your neck and throat area. Repeat 20 times.

While in this position you can try another simple neck exercise by puckering your lips together into a kiss – next, stretch the kiss as if you were trying to kiss the ceiling. Keep your lips puckered for 10 counts, then relax, bring your head back to normal and repeat 5 times. These are a great anti-double chin exercises.

• Keep your body well hydrated by drinking six to eight glasses of water per day.

• Know thy balms. Look for hydrating ingredients like beeswax, shea butter, vitamin E and almond, jojoba or coconut oils.

• Never lick your lips to moisten them. Saliva exerts a drying effect that worsens the problem.

• Do not chew on your lips.

• Exfoliate regularly. Lip exfoliators (products that contain fruit-acid-based alpha or beta hydroxy acids) slough off dead skin - much like the ones you use on your face. Don’t exfoliate if your lips are chapped.

• Apply anti-oxidant lip treatments frequently throughout the day.

• Lips are susceptible to sunburn since they lack melanin, the pigment that helps shield skin from the sun. Sun damage can alter collagen (which gives lips fullness and resilience) and can even lead to melanoma. Lips should be protected from the sun with a product that contains an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 15 or more. When spending extensive amounts of time outdoors, a lip care product with an SPF of 30—should be used.

• Matte lipsticks can be extremely drying - use them sparingly when your lips are chapped. Choose hydrating lipsticks instead (as indicated by ingredients like vitamin E and/or glycerin) or add a layer of moisturizing lip balm underneath.

• A dab of honey on your lips will act as a humectant, drawing moisture from the air to your skin.

• A small amount of vegetable glycerine (available in natural food centres/health stores) mixed with vitamin E or wheat germ oil makes an effective, nourishing moisture barrier.

• After brushing your teeth before bedtime, apply your favourite lip balm again. Skin repairs itself at night, so while you sleep, your lips will recover from all the eating, smiling, talking and of course kissing that they did during the day.

• It has been known for some time, that toothpaste can dry out lips. As soon as you finish brushing your teeth, make sure you rinse any traces of toothpaste off your lips.

Lips are often neglected in a beauty regime. You apply lipstick and forget about the drying, chapping and damage that can occur or has already occurred. Yet, with a little loving care, your lips can look and feel perfect all day long and all year round.

Establish a theme. Using complimentary colors, create a balloon arch at the entrance of the dance or reception hall. Limit the arch to 2 to 3 colors.

String alternating colors in a tight arch that extends the length of the entrance.

For a dramatic look, start the arch at the floor of the door frame and continue the arch to the opposite side of the door frame. Extend the arch as far as you desire and be specific in the pattern formed by the alternating balloons.

Hide the ceiling. Use a helium machine to inflate enough balloons to cover the ceiling. Allow long strings to drape down from the balloon and add texture to the room. For an added effect, place balloon centerpieces on the table or string balloon decorations around the corners of the room.

In Mexico, this period of the century is called Porfiriato, which is comparable to the Victorian era in English speaking countries. The Mexican president Porfirio Diaz brought this celebration to Mexican culture due to his own personal admiration of French culture and couture.

The meaning of the ceremony has changed over time and in recent years the celebration is becoming more popular in the United States than it actually is in Latin America. Quince años celebrated in the United States is a great ceremony that has become a means of preserving the Latino culture even as Latinos become more Americanized.

The celebration carries religious significance too - it begins with a religious ceremony in which the Quinceañera affirms her Catholic faith. It is customary for the Quinceañera to receive gifts that are religious in nature, such as a cross or medal, a Bible, rosary, or sceptre. The presentation of these gifts by her Padrinos (Godparents) and/or her family members, along with their blessing by the priest, often forms a part of the ceremony.

The Quinceañera carries a doll (representing the last doll of her childhood) intended to represent her childhood. The doll is dressed like the girl. The girl's father exchanges her flat shoes for heels after their dance together. During this exchange of the shoes, the father has the Quinceañera girl/woman give up her doll, symbolizing the Quinceañera girl giving up her childhood to become a woman.

After the religious ceremony, a reception is held either in the Quinceañera's home or in a banquet hall. The decor of this reception often resembles that of a wedding. The Quinceañera's court is typically composed of her Godparents and the Chambelan, a young man who is her companion and date for the evening. This is followed by dances with her father, and then her godfather.

Following these initial presentation dances, the guests join the dance floor as well. Godparents play a significant role in the preparations for the Quinceaños, often handling arrangements for the party, church and celebration. The event is the culmination of the godparents' responsibility to oversee the religious upbringing of their goddaughter. Otherwise, it is customary for the Quinceanera's parents to arrange the celebration.
